Department of English for Engineering 1

The Department of English for Engineering No. 1 was established in 2006. Currently, the department has 29 qualified academic staff members, which include 1 Professor (Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences), 10 Candidates of Sciences (8 of whom are Associate Professors), 2 Doctors of Philosophy, 7 Senior Lecturers, and 13 Lecturers.
The acting head of the department is Professor Olena MOSKALENKO, who holds a Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences degree. The department conducts research and teaching activities across five faculties at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, successfully teaching English to more than 5,000 full-time and part-time students. The department serves the following technical faculties and Educational and Research Institutes: Educational and Research Institute of Energy Saving and Energy Management – IEE, Educational and Research Institute of Institute of Nuclear and Thermal Energy – IATE, Faculty of Electronics – FEL, Faculty of Electric Power Engineering and Automatics – FEA and Faculty of Chemical Technology – XTF.

The main areas of focus for the department include:

  • Providing high-quality instruction in English for technical purposes.
  • Offering consultative assistance to students and preparing them for participation in competitions and conferences.
  • Developing curricula and teaching materials.
  • Creating methods and strategies for translating technical documentation, such as installation instructions and technical specifications.
  • Researching and developing terminology databases for effective translation in engineering and technology.
  • Training students in specific vocabulary and speech structures necessary for engineers working on international team projects.
  • Utilizing innovative technologies and software to automate technical translation and enhance its quality.
  • Studying the interaction of cultural differences in international technical communication and their impact on cooperation effectiveness.

The department’s staff is actively involved in addressing methodological issues in teaching technical English and enhances their qualifications by participating in internships at leading Ukrainian universities, the British Council, and American language education organizations.
The department collaborates with graduating departments at NTUU ‘KPI’ and related departments at other educational institutions. Every spring, scientific conferences are held, where 3rd and 4th-year students present reports in English on topics related to their specialities.
In light of the impact of European integration on education, the department’s faculty implement curricula in line with the Bologna Process. The teachers focus on developing a high level of communicative competence in English among students. Through multimedia technologies, interactive strategies, and communicative methods, students are able to achieve B2 and C1 language proficiency.
The department is committed to enhancing the quality of language instruction and continuously improving the professionalism of its classes. This progress is supported by methodological working groups and scientific sections that hold conferences to exchange experiences, assist young teachers in organizing the educational process, and conduct seminars on the latest teaching methods and technologies.
The department’s educators are dedicated to participating in conferences and seminars, monitoring and implementing new teaching strategies, and collaborating with other universities on important language training issues. They will continue to contribute to the development of modern Ukraine through high-quality education for future leaders in the national scientific community.
