About department

The concept of continuous, end-to-end foreign language education, the need to increase the competitiveness of Ukrainian specialists in various fields of science and technology set the Faculty of Linguistics the task of providing the university with highly qualified personnel, capable of teaching foreign languages ​​professionally.
In 2006, in response to the new orientations of foreign language training of specialists, the department of technical English language No. 1 was created. From the moment the department was founded until 2014, the candidate of pedagogical sciences, professor Nataliya SAYENKO – a strong, strong-willed leader, remained its constant head and inspiration. authoritative leader, organizer and educated specialist.
In different years, the department was headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Yuliya OLIZKO, Candidates of Philological Sciences Yana HRYSCHENKO, Oksana Semida, Inna Akhmad. From July 2022, the acting head of the department is Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Artur GUDMANYAN. Deputy head of the department is Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Inna AHMAD.
Currently, the department includes 32 qualified research and educational workers, including 1 professor, 8 associate professors, 7 senior lecturers, 16 lecturers. Since its existence, the staff of the department has been replenished by 37 graduates of the Faculty of Linguistics.
The department provides teaching of the following disciplines: “Practical course of a foreign language”, “Practical course of English language for professional direction”, “Practical course of English language for business communication”, “Practical course of English language for scientific communication” “English language for scientific activity” for more more than 4,500 full-time and part-time students of IEE, IATE, FEL, FEA, HTF the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”.

The main directions of the department’s work are:

• highly qualified teaching of English language students in professional and academic fields;
• educational and methodological support for the teaching of academic disciplines
• research on foreign language training of future specialists in a polytechnic institution of higher education
• provision of advisory assistance to those seeking higher education and preparation for participation in student Olympiads, conferences and international programs;

The department actively cooperates with graduation departments of the National Technical University of Ukraine
“Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” and with related departments of other institutions of higher education. Scientific conferences are held annually, in which students of 1-2 years participate in a conference dedicated to world achievements in science with their scientific intelligence; senior undergraduate students and master’s students give reports in English about their own scientific research and participate in international projects.
A high level of English communicative competence in teaching English is provided by the use of communicative methods and the use of author’s courses on the Sikorsky platform. Upon completion of the first level of education, students reach the level of language proficiency B2 and C1 for the second level of education.
Within the initiative topic of the Faculty of Linguistics “Strategies for ensuring the quality of professional and foreign language training of future specialists in a polytechnic institution of higher education” (registration number 0120U104866) and three scientific groups “Professional development of scientific and pedagogical workers in teaching English and teaching professional disciplines in English,” English-speaking professional communication of future specialists of engineering specialties in the conditions of globalization, “Research of parallel bodies in engineering fields” specialists of the department carry out thorough scientific research,  published in leading domestic and international publications, which are indexed in scientometric databases and defend theses.
The staff of the department is actively researching topical methodological issues in teaching English in professional and academic fields. Scientific and pedagogical workers are trained in the leading universities of Ukraine and the world, have professional CELTA certification, improve their qualifications at the British Council in Ukraine and a number of professional organizations in language education (IATEFL, TESOL, UATLA, UERA, УАКЛіП, etc.).
The most important projects over 16 years are related to the long-term partnership with the British Council in Ukraine, in particular within the framework of the “English for Universities” project. Based on the results of the project, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine jointly with the British Council in Ukraine developed “Conceptual principles of state policy regarding the development of the English language in the field of higher education in Ukraine”, which was developed with the help of specialists of the department.
The department is actively moving forward, constantly improving the quality of language teaching and raising the professional level of classes. This is facilitated by working groups and scientific sections created at the department, whose members constantly help young teachers in organizing the educational process, hold seminars on the latest methods and technologies of teaching English, and also hold conferences on the exchange of experience, in particular, the department is the organizer of the International Scientific and Practical conference “Corpus and Discourse”.

Research and educational workers of the department provide comprehensive support to applicants in the international arena and contribute to the training of competitive specialists and scientists.
